Yakuza: Like a Dragon Replaces Action Combat With Strategy

The hit RPG series by SEGA is back in a surprising new format: Strategy! Announcing Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon for the PlayStation 4.

SEGA has officially revealed and detailed their next Yakuza game, complete with trailer and detailed webpage. Known as Yakuza 7: Whereabouts of Light and Darkness in Japan (and called Yakuza: Like a Dragon in the West), the game will be coming to the PlayStation 4 some time in 2020.

Following a new protagonist, Like a Dragon is the story of Kasuga Ichiban, a Yakuza member that was recently released from 18 years in prison, the result of taking the fall for his boss’ crimes. But now that he’s out, he’s been abandoned by the clan. Fight against a betraying organization and learn the truth behind their actions.

But this is an RPG, why is it on a site about real-time strategy games?

Because for the first time in Yakuza history, it IS a strategy game. Like a Dragon replaces the real-time action combat with a classic turn-based strategy system. The player will control and decide on the actions of Ichiban and three others in battle. We know it’s not exactly real-time, but it’s close.

Interestingly, we already saw this once. Last April, SEGA released a teaser of the turn-based combat. Most folks believed it to be an April Fool’s joke, but others argued that it looked too well-made to be a joke.

Between this and Empire of Sin, there will be a fair bit of “crime syndicate” strategy games to play soon.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon will release on PlayStation 4 on January 16, 2020, in Japan, and at an undisclosed date in the West.
