Tired of playing your favorite RTS alone? Here’s some good news for you. It took a while, but Age of Empires 3 finally has a co-op game mode.
Detailed in a Steam update, players can now participate in cooperative “story-driven historical narratives and objectives” in the popular RTS game’s Definitive Edition. These experiences are specifically designed for co-op gameplay, including a new enemy AI designed for fighting two opponents instead of one.
Age of Empires 3 has been around for almost 20 years. And during that time, the only multiplayer option available was Competitive. While co-op RTS gameplay wasn’t as prominent as it is nowadays, this is still quite the wait for an update of this caliber.
There will be 12 historical battles available, should you own all of the DLC expansions (6 if you have none). Fortunately, only one person needs to have the DLC for both players to take part in the missions.
Of all of the Age of Empires games out there, I feel like people forget about 3 the most. The second game is a legend, and with 4 being the newest iteration of the series, 3 just gets the shadow. With that, it’s cool to see that it’s still getting the love that the other games are getting.
Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition is available now on Steam for $20 or as part of Xbox GamePass.
