EA has revealed the soundtrack and jukebox for the upcoming Command & Conquer Remastered edition.
When it comes to remakes and remasters, it’s important that the new game properly captures the feeling of the original. The updated textures and graphics appear to be doing that well. But hat about the music?
We get a glimpse of what we can expect, audio-wise, with a recent post on Reddit by EA producer Jim Vessella. The post shows a short video of the jukebox section of the game and all of the in-game music therein.
Vessella explains that they know many folks are anxious for in-game footage, but they aren’t ready to reveal this just yet. In the meantime, they wanted to show off the music. They took heavy feedback about what tracks people wanted to see most and have compiled a healthy playlist of music. Each track will be available in their original, low-fidelity version, high fidelity versions with vocals, and fully remastered versions. In the end, they totaled out to around 175 tracks spanning over 10 hours.
“The process of going through every single piece of music and bringing it to a higher quality standard has been quite a journey back in time for me, and I’m really glad that all of these tracks will finally be heard in full high quality for the remastered game experience. After combing all possible archives, a handful of tracks were just nowhere to be found – this included ‘Snake’ and ‘Fogger’ from C&C Red Alert. One thing that I did back in the Westwood era, was mirror my home studio with the same gear I had at work, and fortunately I had kept much of it all these years. So I started there, and I went to painstaking detail and trial and error to track down and match as much of the exact original sounds and instrumentation I could find, to recreate these songs from scratch in order to have the best high-quality versions once again for the remaster. Hearing these new versions, especially in stereo now, is a whole new experience.”
You can’t have music without a jukebox. The musical feature will be returning for the remaster, allowing players to create their own playlists using songs from multiple games.
We’re a long ways away from the remaster being released. But it’s good to see progress being made, all the same.
