Another game has surfaced looking to find the balance between virtual reality and real-time strategy. Introducing Spuds Unearthed.
Spuds Unearthed is an RTS MOBA VR game (enough letters for you?) that recently released for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive after several months in early access. It features a cartoonish sci-fi environment where the player has to manage against waves of AI enemies using an army of potato-based soldiers. Go from world to world in your interstellar ship, conquering and taking over each planet with your army.
The game borrows from multiple genre ideas. The player has to manage their tribes of spuds in a manner like that of an RTS, but the minion waves and central base concepts are similar to MOBA style games. All the while, the player uses a centralized turret, making it a bit of a first-person shooter as well.
VR is a relatively new concept to gaming, so while there aren’t very many RTS style games for the medium, we’re surprised that there are as many as there are. Though in our opinion, Skyworld is a more faithful take on the genre.
Spuds Unearthed is available now on the Steam and Oculus Store for $20.
